Ye Old College Try

Ye Old College Try

Yesterday, our Eldest came across one of my favourite “Calvin and Hobbes” comics by Bill Watterson. It was originally published on the 28th of June, 1995. I actually remember seeing this one in the paper, and it was bitterly amusing as I wasn’t than even a full year sober. It was a bitter moment of amused irony? Painful reality? I don’t know. Whatever emotion it was, the memory of reading it in the “Boston Globe” print newspaper stuck. Or, was it the “Chicago Tribune”? Damn. I guess it didn’t stick that well in context. But, that’s memory for you. Slippery self-editing and self-selecting things memories.

Anyway, you can pretty much find all of the “Calvin and Hobbes” comics here, at GoComics.com. The one from the 1st of July, 1995 is pretty funny now that I have two sons, both of whom still view Dad at a pack-mule, trampoline, proveyor of unwatched coinage, and the guy that will always notices when they aren’t being as nice as Dad expects them to be. But, mostly as pack-mule.

Wife was of course most amused by the 29th of June, 1995. I don’t know why, she’s not the stay-at-home type. But, it was a nice reminder of why we keep the boys on as close to a sugar-free diet as you can on a reality-based budget. I do wish the print version of “It’s A Magical World: A Calvin and Hobbes Collection,” by Bill Watterson had the original publication dates in it. It would be that extra little bonus for the parents.
